One of the benefits of bringing together companies with overlapping and complementary services is that building a career at handl Group isn’t about working your way up in a single company. Do well in one place, and opportunities will soon crop up somewhere else. That’s certainly been the case for Tom Sanderson.

I first joined the group straight out of college, working as an invoicing clerk for Speed Medical. Things have certainly progressed from there!”

Over the years, Tom worked in multiple roles across Speed Medical, gaining a deep understanding of the way the company worked and the wider industry it operated in. Something that’d come in handy as handl Group expanded.

Following a brief detour to study Computer Science with the Open University, Tom saw his future involving finances more than development – and an opportunity soon arose.

When Speed Medical advertised for a trainee accountant, I had to take it. I was trained by the company’s Finance Manager and a group accountant that worked around handl, along with some mentoring from (divisional Finance Director) Sharon Butler-Hughes.”

This mentoring was crucial, as it allowed handl Group to recognise Tom’s affinity and ability for financial matters. As the group continued to grow, Sharon encouraged him to keep developing and entrusted him with more and more responsibility.

In 2019, the group invested in TG Associates and then Advanced Child Care Assessments. I was handed the financial reins for both as the new Site Accountant.”

With the restructuring to handl Group’s current divisional set up, Tom was elevated to Finance Manager, bringing WillisPalmer under his remit after their acquisition in 2024. This trust is something Tom believes has been shown in him across his whole career.

“I’ve always had consistent support from the whole handl Group. There’s been mentorship from senior leaders, and opportunities as the group has grown and acquired new companies. They’ve invested in me, and I want to repay that investment by contributing to the whole group’s success.”

With well over a decade at handl Group under his belt and a career path that’s led from opportunity to opportunity, Tom’s clear on the benefits that being a part of our team has for anyone looking to make a success of their own career.

handl Group is great at looking after employees, nurturing talent and providing opportunities to progress. My 13 years with the group is a testament to just how seriously they take developing the skills of employees – and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s worked out.”
