Mind Right – experts in psychological rehabilitation, and a proud member of handl Group

Mind Right’s common sense approach to psychological rehabilitation brings peace of mind to the personal injury sector and employers alike. Their story is one that starts with handl Group.

Sometimes growth starts with an idea. Take Mind Right. One of our funded startups, Mind Right began as a conversation between our own Chris Chatterton and current Mind Right MD Pete Clark.

At the time, Pete wasn’t MD. And Mind Right wasn’t Mind Right. The seeds of that idea have turned into a key part of handl Group’s Expert Witness and Assessment division, and a company that’s growing year on year.

Mind Right’s Goals

Pete Clark was brought into handl Group to develop the idea that would eventually become Mind Right in 2020. Alongside Chris Chatterton, the pair saw an opportunity for internal partnerships across the group to enter the mental health and personal injury market:

I was part of the organisation four months before it became Mind Right. Chris needed someone with my skillset and background to develop an idea for a new psychological rehabilitation provider, and between September and December 2020, we developed a proposition that would eventually become the company that’s so successful today.”

It was clear from day one that they could see the potential here to build something that could scale and grow quite quickly, and that they were prepared to back me to achieve that.”

The  Launch – 2021

In January 2021, Mind Right officially launched – and even though it was set up to support other companies across the group, the first referrals took advantage of Pete’s reputation and contacts, rather than being fed work from across the group.

Our first customers, first referrals, they were all external. I’d been brought in because I know case managers and they know me, so it was good to be able to go to market from day one. Nowadays, we see a lot more business from within the group, but we were backed to go out and win business from the start.

While Pete took Mind Right to market, the group helped him build the foundations for future success and growth:

It took a while to put together the team we needed – people came and went – but there’s now over 30 of us looking after more than 2,500 people. But while that was happening, the group were helping me build from the ground up. EQL built our digital front end, Speed Medical were key in helping me recruit a network of experts, and handl itself provided our HR, marketing communications and finance systems.”

Mind Right’s Present – and Future

From a start-up to a successful company in fewer than three years, Mind Right’s growth has been down to the skill and hard work of Pete and his team, and the backing of the board.

Take things like ISO27001 accreditation. For most startups, it’s an expense for something you don’t need to do business, but that makes life better for your customers. We wanted it, the board supported us. Same with our marketing, all our internal systems. handl Group is all about providing the right backing to strengthen startups and get it right first time.

But it’s not a one-way relationship. As the Expert Witness and Assessment Services division’s brands work closer together, Pete and the Mind Right team are delivering value across the group:

We were set up to succeed, and now that success is paying off around the group. We’re getting more involved with other brands in our division, working more closely. We’re currently helping to create a whole new service for reach, and we’re seeing lots of work coming our way thanks to our relationship with Corporé.

Mind Right’s success shows that the right idea can deliver real growth, as long as it’s backed, and the people involved are given room to innovate and access to relationships with other businesses. As a leading business in its own right, and as a valued part of a more interconnected division, Mind Right proves that for startups our growth really is your goal.
