James Blyth – Rewarding Management Experience

In 2014, handl Group acquired the first business that’d form part of its ancillary insurance division. Coplus. Providing 24/7 claims handling services and underwriting, the company would help us work more prominently in the insurance sector. But Coplus would need the right leadership in place. We found it in James Blyth.

I’d joined Coplus long before the acquisition, working as Finance Manager in 2000, and General Manager in 2008. In 2014 we became part of handl Group, and they’ve provided support, investment and mentorship that’ve put me on a journey of continuous learning, leadership growth and strategic transformation.

When we acquire a business, we make sure that existing leaders are given the chance to develop their careers – meaning we keep the institutional experience that helped a company grow. James provided that experience in spades. In 2018, he made the step up to become Operations Director.

As Operations Director, my focus was on delivering operational excellence, improving processes, technology and strengthening team performance to ensure we consistently met the needs of our insurer and broker partners.”

“Over time, this allowed me to develop a deep understanding of our business, our customers, and the broader insurance market. I gained valuable experience leading large teams and driving performance improvements through data, innovation, and collaboration across the group.”

Just two years later, an opportunity arose for James to progress even further. Coplus needed a new Managing Director, and we needed someone who understood the company, the group, and the industry inside and out.

Through the trust and guidance of the handl Group, stepping into the Managing Director role has been both an exciting progression and humbling responsibility. Providing autonomy to shape the strategic direction of Coplus. Building on our strong foundations while positioning the business for sustainable growth and innovation.”

It’s been a real change for James – going from being hands-on and delivering services to thinking more strategically, but as his leadership skills have grown over the past 12 years, he’s taken every opportunity to move upwards and develop himself as a manager and leader – while meeting Coplus’ goals for growth.

The transition from being the doer in an operational role to leading Coplus’ vision has been a challenge at times, but having access to the experience within the group has got me to a place where my focus is now empowering our people, enhancing our customer experience and ensuring our culture continues to reflect our core values.

All in all, this progression has taught James that if there’s one clear path to success – it’s leadership.

My personal journey with handl, and how I’ve progressed my career, has reinforced my belief that effective leadership is about inspiring others to deliver their best while never losing sight of the business’ shared purpose to succeed. That’s not just a Coplus value, it’s one shared by the group as a whole.”
